HISTORY
Constructed in 1905 to house the Argyll Motor Works, then the world's largest car factory. At the time it was considered to be an extravagant folly by competitors, but now this ornate A listed building of red sandstone and opulent marble is admired by all. When it was built, this amazing Grade A listed building was the largest motor car factory in the world. Its marble and sandstone façade, reminiscent of an Edwardian town hall or railway station, is just part of a factory that originally covered 11 acres.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, this plant was turning out more motor cars than any other factory in Europe. However, this was short lived: in 1910 only 452 were made - half of what was needed to keep the company profitable. Many fine Argyll motor cars found their way to the more prosperous south of England.

During Second World War, the building was used by the MoD for the manufacture of torpedos that were tested in nearby Lochs. After being left unused for several years it was renovated and reopened in 1997 with a six-million-pound restoration. In 2009 the building opened the Cars of the Stars Scotland motor museum.

Cars of the Stars Scotland museum opens here today

Wednesday 7th July 2009

A new exhibition of world famous cars from movies and television has opened in the Loch Lomond Galleries in Alexandria.

Car enthusiast Peter Nelson has already built up a unique collection of famous motor vehicles from TV and film which have been on display at the original ‘Cars of the Stars’ museum in Keswick. Now he has brought his impressive range of stunning vehicles north of the border to the shores of Loch Lomond.

Peter first began collecting vehicles which had become almost as big as the stars who drove them in films or television shows thirty years ago and his collection includes Del Boy Trotter’s three wheeler van, the red and white Starsky & Hutch Ford Gran Torino, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Herbie Love Bug, the ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean, and David Hasselhoff’s K.I.T.T Knightrider supercar and many more. These cars are all now on display in his new ‘Cars of the Stars’ museum in Alexandria, West Dumbartonshire.

The museum will open to the public on Wednesday 7th July in the Loch Lomond Galleries motor museum on North Main Street, Alexandria.
